Close, but no Cigar

Last week at lunch, we were discussing the Attorneygate scandal, see It's a Crime, and began speculating when Gonzales would resign. Someone suggested that we should start a pool, to see who got the closest date to his actual resignation. Then, one of the LLWL Gang* said -- Good Friday. We all moaned, then decided that that would be the perfect day -- a Friday, the week-end of Easter, so no one would be paying attention. After that, we couldn't get any other takers to bet on another day.

So of course, I had to check the news at 5 pm today. No Gonzales. But -- MSNBC is reporting that Gonzales aide Goodling to resign. Yes, Monica "5th Amendment" Goodling is Gone. See The New & Improved 5th Amendment. As MSNBC reports:

Monica Goodling, the counsel and White House liaison to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, says in a letter that she will resign, effective Saturday.

Goodling has been on a leave of absence. Her lawyers have told Congress she would invoke the Fifth Amendment protections against self-incrimination if called to testify about the firings of eight U.S. attorneys.
