The Odd Couple

While everyone was amazed at the coupling of Pat Robertson and Rudy Giuliani, through Robertson's surprising endorsement of Giuliani last week, In stunner, Pat Robertson endorses Giuliani, for me the truly astounding pairing was that of Bill Clinton and Richard Mellon Scaife, So Happy Together.

Now Robertson has got to be one of the sickest puppies I've seen in a long time. Rudy better heed this advice: Don't Drink The Kool-Aid with the man -- for my money, Robertson puts Jim Jones to shame. Nonetheless, he's also a scam artist extraordinaire; he wants to be on the winning team, so he'll go with the Giuliani.

The really odd couple is Clinton/Scaife. Scaife spent many years and mucho dollars funding the "Arkansas Project" and other ventures to dig up dirt on the Clintons. Although they both belong to the "women trouble club," especially with Scaife's nasty divorce, see Mr. Mellonhead, that can't explain the friendly lunch they recently shared:

Clinton, pouring on the charm, greeted Scaife like an old friend. "President Clinton believes in redemption and moving forward," says spokeswoman Jennifer Hanley. Ruddy says they talked about Clinton's charitable work and avoided opening old wounds. After receiving the full Bill treatment, Scaife left with a new outlook on the man he had once set out to crush. Scaife isn't ready to sign on to Hillary's campaign—he's still a Republican. But his lawyer, Yale Gutnick, says Bill Clinton and Richard Mellon Scaife are now members of a "mutual admiration society." Cue the apocalypse.
Who knows -- after the mess of things Bush made, I guess Clinton looks good in Scaife's view. For his part, I'm sure Clinton would be happy to neutralize his major nemesis so Hillary doesn't have to deal with the same unrelenting smear tactics during her campaign and after -- if there is an after.
