In the Spirit of Peace
A favorite Christmas carol is It Came Upon the Midnight Clear with the words:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,
From heaven's all-gracious King."
Philly certainly needs to come upon its own Midnight Clear, with some peace and goodwill to men. As of December 6, there were 378 homicides in Philadelphia.
Instead of guns hanging for the Christmas tree, see Trim a Tree, I was heartened to see:
See the Philadelphia Inquirer, Gallery is promoting peace with its (non-gun) ornament. Although it would have been better, as Anthony Preziosi of Mantua wrote in his Letter to the Editor:The Gallery at Market East is hoping the "peace" ornament it's promoting this year is as popular as the Urban Outfitters handgun ornament that has sold out in most stores.
The Gallery is selling blue and white, disc-shaped ornaments to benefit the Philadelphia Anti-Drug, Anti-Violence Network. The ornaments will be on sale for $5 at the downtown mall's visitors center. All of the proceeds will go to the network.
Maureen Brady, the Gallery's marketing director, said the mall approached the network with the idea. "We knew we wanted to do something that promoted peace," she said.
The ornaments, which were designed by Octo Design Group in Philadelphia, say, "In the spirit of peace... in your home, in your neighborhood and in your city."
I think it is interesting that an article about a Christmas ornament shaped like a handgun finds itself on the front page (with photo), while an article about an ornament promoting peace (without photo) finds itself on the bottom of the front page of the Business section.Peace Ornament: IN THE SPIRIT OF PEACE at the Gallery at Market East.
