They're Back

I've mentioned before that my daughter attends a Quaker school in Center City. See, e.g., Love Park Rally.

She's also on the girl's soccer team at Friends Select. Last year, the team only had 11 players, so they barely had enough girls to make a squad, without any subs. They've come a long way, baby. I went to a pre-season game and the team is full of energetic, enthusiastic girls, with a new coach guiding them on. Today, the team was featured in the Inquirer, Friends Select makes return to varsity play:

After a two-season hiatus, the Friends Select girls' soccer team is back playing varsity competition.

Never mind that the Falcons (0-1-1) are winless. They are extremely excited about losing their junior-varsity status.

"It was hard for us to be serious," center midfielder Maggie McMahon said of the JV stint. "We only had two games [last season]. Actually, we had four games, and two were canceled."

McMahon, a senior captain, was a member of Friends Select's varsity team as a freshman. At the time, she expected to finish her career as a four-year varsity performer.

A lack of player interest after the 2004 season derailed that dream. With 26 members on this season's roster, Friends Select felt it was time to rejoin the varsity ranks.

"It's hard to adjust to having this many players on the team," McMahon said with a laugh.

The Falcons showed improvement when they tied Neumann-Goretti, 3-3, on Monday.

"Everyone is really excited about this season," McMahon said.

Go team go.
